Edith AI modes

In group chat, repository owners can control how proactively the Edithly AI ("Edith") participates in the thread, from the group chat settings panel.

Manual mode

The AI stays quiet until someone explicitly calls it — for example, by mentioning @edithly with a question. This keeps the thread purely for human discussion unless the AI is specifically asked to weigh in.

Smart mode

The AI can respond on its own when it detects that help is needed, without being explicitly mentioned — useful for groups that want Edith to jump in proactively (answering a student's question as it's asked, for instance) rather than waiting to be called.

Choosing a mode

Smart mode is optional and can be turned on or off from the group chat settings panel at any time — there's no commitment either way, so a repo owner can switch between manual and smart mode as the group's needs change.
